It started with a cough

He started his day

As he always would

He laced his shoes

And ran through the woods

He listened to music

And felt the breeze

Passing through

The towering trees

On returning home

He panted much

He couldn’t understand

Why it hurt so much?

He thought nothing of it

And shrugged it off

He ran a bath

And washed the sweat off

Kissing his wife

Then his two kids

Not to wake them

God forbid

Ready for work

He got in the car

He coughed hard

And saw stars

He arrived at work

Feeling weird

Dazed and tired

He started to fear

He collapsed on the floor

The others came

Call an ambulance

He is in pain

The ambulance arrived

In their gear

Spaceman suits

Ordering people clear

Took away

Everybody out

Cordoned off

People shout

To the hospital

This poor guy

Can hardly breathe

He can only lie

Put in a bed

Examined, scared

No one close

To love or care

Feeling weak

He can hardly move

Crying now

What can he do?

Put on oxygen

Case getting worse

Family told

They have been cursed

He slips away

To a final sleep

Forgetting family

As they weep

How we watch over

Our sweet little ones

To be sure they are ok

Wrapped around their fingers

We’d do anything

As they suffer

We can only wait

And watch

When there are spiders

And flies

Keeping them from sleep

We are there

Is it because they need us

Or we need to be needed

I like the fact I can say what I want

Do not judge

I am only human

My deepest thoughts laid bare

On a screen blinking at me

In a sombre room

Where i hear only my breathing

I adorn the silence

But I yearn for peace

Never happy

Although I have love

If I was to have everything

I would still be unhappy

And I probably will always be

As this emotion has drowned me

I always ask why

I can’t escape it

It is always pulling me back

Even though I am simple

I am just existing

I wish i could be happier

Will i be set free

Miraculously unshackle

Will my debts be paid

To society

To my ex wife

Will i be at peace with my mother

Will my father come back to me

Can I dream for peace

An end to the pandemic

Water where there is none

Food where famine has been shunned

Can I help someone

Who needs to be helped

Can I matter to someone

Can I smile once more

Can I be loved

Can I love

An angel was sweet

As sweet as can be

She loved a boy

Who hid in a tree

He would hide each day

That cute little one

Hiding from dad

As there was not mum

He would cry and speak

Aloud to himself

He would arrange his comics

Up high on his shelf

A to z

With so much care

Such precision

He liked to stare

Did this mean he was different

Maybe a bit

Did it matter?

Of course not you twit

He was so special

As the angel would see

She would guide him

Keep him happy

She liked his words

Oh so kind

Reflected thoughts

Taking his time

Touching his thoughts

The angel would sing

Feeding him joy

From deep within

What is your name?

My angel, my love

Erica, I am yours
